Herford’s Local Election Heads to Runoff After No Clear Winner
The local elections in Herford district have concluded, with none of the four candidates securing over 50% of the votes. Mirco Schmidt (CDU) and Frank Diembeck (SPD / Alliance 90/The Greens) will face off in a runoff election on September 28, 2025.
The district election committee officially announced the election results on September 17, 2025. Mirco Schmidt received 43.60% of the votes, while Frank Diembeck secured 40.57%. The runoff election will take place at voters' original polling stations, using existing voter notifications or IDs. Postal voting applications for the runoff are open from September 15, with in-person postal voting available from September 18. Polling stations will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day. A total of 198,711 citizens are eligible to vote, with 114,024 participating, resulting in a 57.38% turnout.
The runoff election between Mirco Schmidt and Frank Diembeck will determine the next district administrator of Herford. Voters are encouraged to exercise their democratic right and participate in the election process.
