There are group of people holding placards and walking. These are the trees. I can see small bushes. This is the banner. I can see a building with name boards attached to it. These look like cars. I think these are the current polls.

How Yolo and Lake Counties Are Boosting California's Voter Turnout

Voter turnout remains a challenge across California, with many residents citing a lack of information as a key barrier. Yet in Yolo County, young voters have shown higher engagement, partly thanks to local programmes aimed at education and participation. Nearby Lake County has also taken steps to make voting more accessible for all residents. In Yolo County, the Youth Civic Initiative works to teach high school students about voting and local government. The programme includes events like the Youth Empowerment Summit, which has helped increase students’ understanding of elections. These efforts may have contributed to a strong turnout among young voters—residents aged 18 to 24 in the county voted at a 69.54% rate in the 2024 presidential election, exceeding the state average.

Lake County has focused on removing practical barriers to voting. Homebound or hospitalised voters can request ballot delivery and retrieval. For those unable to enter polling places, curbside voting assistance is available. These measures aim to ensure everyone can participate securely and conveniently. Statewide, research shows that 38% of voters avoid the polls due to insufficient information about candidates and issues. Another 41% say they would be more likely to vote if they had access to unbiased, trusted news sources. Political ads alone have proven ineffective in boosting turnout for many.

Yolo County’s youth programmes and Lake County’s accessibility measures offer practical solutions to low voter engagement. With clearer information and easier participation, more Californians could take part in future elections. The success of these local efforts may provide a model for broader improvements across the state.
