Iloilo City launches free Libre Sakay buses amid transport strike chaos
The Iloilo City Government has launched a free transport service to help commuters during Monday's transport strike. Called Libre Sakay, the initiative offers rides from key district plazas to City Hall at no cost. The move comes as schools across the city suspended in-person classes, shifting to alternative learning methods for all students.
Six buses have been stationed at three major pick-up points across the city. These vehicles operate in two shifts: from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning and again from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the afternoon.
The service targets local workers and residents struggling to reach their destinations. With public transport disrupted, the city government stepped in to reduce the strain on daily commuters. Meanwhile, face-to-face classes were called off for the day. Schools at all levels switched to remote or alternative learning formats to avoid further disruption.
The Libre Sakay programme provides temporary relief for those affected by the strike. Free rides remain available at designated times and locations. Schools will continue remote lessons until regular transport services resume.
