Ilse Aigner gains key backing for Germany's next federal presidency
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has backed proposals to nominate CSU politician Ilse Aigner as the next federal president, calling it "an idea worth pursuing further" in an interview with Der Spiegel.
"This is a viable model and option. I can see it happening," Dobrindt said. The suggestion follows recent comments by CSU leader Markus Söder, who floated Aigner as a potential candidate for the presidency.
The successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be elected by the Federal Convention next spring.
