Inova Alexandria Hospital unveils $1.1M medical campus for 2028 opening

Inova Alexandria Hospital is set to open a new 1.1 million-square-foot medical campus by late 2028. The project, currently under construction at the former Landmark Mall site, will replace the existing facility that has served the community since 1962. The hospital, Virginia's oldest, traces its roots back to 1873 and continues to expand its services with modern infrastructure.

Construction began in 2024 on the sprawling campus, which will feature a 569,000-square-foot hospital with 194 beds. The design also includes a 111,000-square-foot cancer centre and an 83,000-square-foot specialty care centre. Additional facilities will cover emergency care, intensive care units, operating theatres, imaging services, and outpatient clinics.

The project has received strong community backing, including a $2 million donation from The Twig, a nonprofit serving as the Junior Auxiliary of Alexandria Hospital since 1933. Over the decades, the organisation has contributed more than $7 million to the hospital. In recognition, the new campus will name its conference centre after The Twig.

Dr. Rina Bansal, president of Inova Alexandria Hospital, acknowledged the long-standing partnership between the hospital and the local community. Lori Ring, president of The Twig, emphasised that the donation aligns with the nonprofit's mission to support outstanding healthcare in Alexandria.

The new campus will consolidate advanced medical services into a single, modern location. Scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, it will replace the current 1962 building while maintaining the hospital's legacy of care. The facility's expanded capacity and specialised centres aim to meet growing healthcare needs in the region.
