Iraqi refugee attacked in Lisbon after April 25th celebrations
Omar Al-Hayali never imagined that on the night of April 24, he would end up in the hospital. He was the victim of an assault by a group of young people near Alameda metro station in Lisbon.
Omar had just returned from the April 25th celebrations in Largo do Carmo. It was just before 1 a.m.
Beyond the verbal abuse, they tried to steal his bicycle. A video of the attack captures the immediate aftermath.
He was taken by ambulance to São José Hospital, and the Public Security Police (PSP) were called to the scene. The medical report states that one of his wounds was about three centimeters long and required stitches.
Al-Hayali, now 27, was born in Iraq. A recognized refugee, he has lived in Portugal since 2019.
Today, he is an undergraduate psychology student and primarily works as a translator. Though he feels integrated in Portugal, he misses his family and Iraq—a country he hasn't visited in 12 years.
