Italy Approves Extradition of Ukrainian Man Tied to Nord Stream Sabotage

New details have emerged about the composition of the sabotage team responsible for the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions. According to investigative reports, the group of divers included a professional Ukrainian diver codenamed "Freya," who had previously worked as an erotic model. The information was published by Bild.

The woman's unconventional background was reportedly leveraged to craft a cover story for the operation. Under the pretext of their alibi, the saboteurs were prepared to claim—if questioned by law enforcement—that they were in the strait to film an adult underwater movie.

Sources close to the investigation told the outlet that in her youth, "Freya" posed for "provocative photoshoots" before taking up diving several years ago, where she "discovered a remarkable talent" for the sport. It was her underwater skills that ultimately secured her a place in the sabotage team.

Details about "Freya" were shared with The Wall Street Journal's Bojan Pancevski—author of The Sabotage of Nord Stream—by anonymous participants in the operation.

Earlier, we reported that Italy's Court of Cassation upheld the decision to extradite Ukrainian citizen Sergei Kuznetsov to Germany. German authorities allege Kuznetsov was a member of the sabotage group behind the 2022 attacks on Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. His lawyer, Nicolai Canestrini, stated that the extradition is expected within the next 10 days, though the court has not yet disclosed the reasons for rejecting the appeal.
