Jens Spahn secures second term as Union group leader unopposed
Jens Spahn has been reconfirmed as leader of the Bundestag’s center-right Union parliamentary group. The vote took place on Tuesday, with no rival candidate stepping forward to challenge him. His leadership term is now set to continue until the end of this legislative period. A year ago, Spahn first won the role with strong backing, securing 91.3 percent of the vote. This time, his support remained high, though slightly lower at 86.5 percent. The Union traditionally excludes abstentions from its vote counts, which may affect the final percentage.
Under normal rules, Spahn would not face another reconfirmation until 2029. However, his current term aligns with the legislative cycle, meaning he will lead the group through the remaining years of this parliament. The result confirms Spahn’s position as a key figure in the CDU/CSU alliance. With no opposition in the vote, his leadership remains unchallenged for now. The group will continue under his direction until the next general election.
