Khabarovsk imposes forest ban as wildfires spark emergency response
Wildfires in Khabarovsk Territory have prompted swift action from local authorities. On May 12, Governor Dmitry Demeshin held an emergency meeting with regional officials to address the growing number of landscape fires. Measures are now in place to monitor and contain the blazes before they spread further. During the meeting, Demeshin announced an immediate ban on forest visits across the entire territory. The restriction will remain until the fire situation stabilises. Authorities have also stepped up monitoring efforts, using satellite tracking, video surveillance, and drone patrols to detect fires early.
Deputy Prime Minister Irina Gorbacheva addressed public concerns after videos circulated on social media showing smoke near a federal highway. In a statement on her official MAX messaging channel, she clarified that the footage was from last year and unrelated to current conditions. Gorbacheva confirmed that traffic on federal and regional roads continues to operate normally, with no reports of smoke or fires affecting major routes. Firefighting teams have managed to contain most blazes within the first 24 hours of detection. The focus remains on rapid response to prevent larger outbreaks, with patrols and aerial surveillance playing a key role in the operation.
The ban on forest access and increased monitoring aim to reduce fire risks in the region. Officials continue to reassure residents that major transport routes remain unaffected. Updates on the situation will be provided as conditions develop.
