King Charles III urges U.S. to strengthen Ukraine defence in historic speech
The alliance between the two nations "cannot rest on past successes," Britain's monarch declared in a speech before both chambers of the U.S. Congress.
"The challenges we face are too great for any single nation to confront alone," King Charles III said, urging both countries to uphold their shared values and resist calls for a "growing retreat into isolationism."
The King quoted the U.S. president himself, recalling his state visit to London last autumn, when he described the bond between the United States and the United Kingdom as "beyond measure and eternal, irreplaceable and unbreakable."
In the presence of U.S. Vice President JD Vance and other senior administration officials, Charles III said he prays "with all his heart" that this alliance will endure—alongside partners across Europe, the Commonwealth, and the world—and that it will reject voices urging both nations toward "ever-deeper isolationism."
He also cited British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with whom Trump has had a strained relationship in recent weeks over the conflict in Iran, when Starmer spoke of an "indispensable alliance."
The monarch called on U.S. lawmakers to show "unwavering resolve" in defending Ukraine against Russian invasion and in pursuing a "just and lasting peace."
