Krefeld's iconic Schluff steam train retires after decades of service

Krefeld’s historic Schluff steam train has been retired after years of service. The decision comes amid financial pressures, despite efforts from local groups to keep it running. Many see the move as necessary but still regret the loss of a beloved landmark. The Schluff has long been a symbol of Krefeld’s heritage, cherished by residents and visitors alike. However, the cost of a full restoration—estimated at over €2.5 million—proved too high for the city. Both the Schluff Association and the local utility company campaigned to preserve the train, but financial constraints ultimately led to its retirement.

Instead of being scrapped, the *Schluff* will be relocated to a locomotive shed at the Transport Museum on St. Töniser Straße. While this ensures its preservation, some have proposed alternative locations to keep it more visible to the public. The debate over its future continues, even as the decision stands.

The retirement of the Schluff marks the end of an era for Krefeld. Though the train will remain in the city, its move to the museum means fewer people will see it in operation. Officials maintain that the decision was unavoidable, given the high costs of upkeep.
