Last Eternal Flame in the Baltic States extinguished over safety concerns
The last Eternal Flame in the Baltic States has been extinguished due to technical issues. Authorities in Daugavpils took action in March, citing safety concerns as the reason for shutting it down. The flame was turned off after a fault was detected in one of the gas valves. Instead of repairing the defect, officials decided to remove the gas equipment entirely. The site has since been fenced off, and public access is now restricted.
As a result, residents will be unable to visit the memorial or lay flowers on May 9. The decision means the flame will not burn again, marking the end of its presence in the region. The extinguishing of the flame follows a direct response to the identified technical problem. The removal of the gas system and the closure of the site ensure no further risks. May 9 ceremonies will now take place without the traditional tribute at the location.
