LGBTQ+ advocates demand stronger action from Canada's leader on equality
Fae Johnstone, executive director of Queer Momentum, has criticised Prime Minister Mark Carney for not doing enough to support LGBTQ+ rights. Speaking in Halifax on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, Johnstone warned that Canada now faces a pivotal moment in its fight for inclusivity. Johnstone urged Carney to take a firmer stand in defending LGBTQ+ communities. They stressed that freedom and equality must apply to all Canadians without exception. The call came as activists demanded stronger action against discrimination.
The federal Liberal government has pledged over £54 million over five years to back LGBTQ+ initiatives. Some of this funding will go towards security at Pride events. Gender Equality Minister Rechie Valdez also spoke out, stating that every Canadian deserves freedom, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity. Johnstone argued that Carney’s approach should focus on uplifting marginalised groups rather than just addressing discrimination in isolation. Their remarks highlighted growing frustration among advocates who want more visible leadership on these issues.
The government’s funding announcement comes alongside ongoing calls for greater political commitment. Johnstone’s criticism puts pressure on Carney to demonstrate stronger support for LGBTQ+ rights. The debate reflects wider concerns about how Canada will protect and advance equality in the coming years.
