Lisbon's Queima das Fitas Festival Cancelled Over Noise and Logistics
Lisbon’s Queima das Fitas festival, planned for May 15 and 16 at the University Stadium, has been cancelled. Organisers pointed to multiple challenges, including strict noise restrictions and logistical hurdles, as key reasons for the decision.
The festival faced a major setback when the Lisbon City Council (CML) issued a Special Noise License limiting music to just 1 a.m. Organisers had requested an extension until 4 a.m., matching the end times of similar events in other cities. CML, however, refused to adjust the deadline and suggested finding a different venue if a later finish was desired.
Despite accepting the 1 a.m. cutoff, organisers later announced the cancellation. They cited 'a series of constraints', including logistical, operational, and negative perceptions from past recreational events. The council denied responsibility, stating that the core traditions of Queima das Fitas would still proceed as planned.
The festival’s cancellation leaves organisers and attendees without the main event. While the core traditions will continue, the music and extended celebrations will not take place. The decision highlights ongoing tensions between event organisers and local noise regulations.
