Lower Saxony police buy €613,000 BMW motorcycles using climate infrastructure funds
The state police in Lower Saxony have acquired 16 new BMW motorcycles at a cost of €613,000. The purchase was made possible through Germany’s 'Special Asset for Infrastructure and Climate Neutrality' fund, originally intended for infrastructure upgrades and climate initiatives. The federal government set up the €500 billion fund in 2022 with a 12-year term. Its purpose was to tackle deteriorating roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure while promoting climate neutrality. Federal states, including Lower Saxony, were granted access to these funds for qualifying projects.
The Lower Saxony Interior Ministry defended the motorcycle purchase by classifying it as a modernisation of public infrastructure. Without this funding, the police force’s limited budget would have delayed the acquisition for years. Unlike the electric bikes bought in 2020, these new motorcycles rely on internal combustion engines. Critics have questioned whether the purchase aligns with the fund’s environmental goals. However, the ministry maintained that the motorcycles were necessary for operational efficiency and fell within the fund’s broader infrastructure mandate.
The €613,000 expenditure highlights how the fund’s flexible criteria allow for diverse spending. While the motorcycles improve police mobility, their reliance on fossil fuels contrasts with earlier electric vehicle investments. The decision underscores the balance between immediate operational needs and long-term climate objectives.
