Mäc Geiz files for insolvency but keeps all 183 stores open

Discount retail chain Mäc Geiz has filed for insolvency. The company cited a weak consumer climate and rising costs as key reasons for its financial troubles. Management has confirmed that all 183 stores across Germany will remain open for now. Mäc Geiz began in 1994 with its first store in Halle (Saale). In 2024, the firm moved its headquarters to a warehouse and logistics centre in Landsberg, Saxony-Anhalt. Earlier this year, in February 2025, competitor Kodi acquired the chain.

The management team plans to stay in control during insolvency proceedings. They have applied for self-administration to oversee the process. Rüdiger Grommes, managing director of GEIZ Handelsgesellschaft mbH, stated that the company is reviewing all operations to adapt to current economic challenges.

Around 1,200 employees are at risk of losing their jobs. Their wages will be covered for three months by the Federal Employment Agency through insolvency benefits. The insolvency filing comes after a period of financial strain. Rising energy, rent, and labour costs contributed to the company’s difficulties. The business will continue operating its stores while restructuring efforts proceed.
