Magadan's Cosmonauts Square to undergo first major overhaul in 20 years
Maxim Malakhov, a deputy of the Magadan Regional Duma, has commented on the start of preparations for the reconstruction of Cosmonauts Square in the regional capital. The work will be carried out under the national project Infrastructure for Life, the press service of the Magadan Regional Duma reports.
The project won public support through an online vote as part of the federal program Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment in 2025. According to the lawmaker, the large-scale improvement efforts are divided into two phases. The first is set to be completed by September 15, while the second will wrap up in December of this year. Builders will replace the existing pavement with colored concrete slabs to give the space a unique look and clearly define rest and promenade zones. They will also install drainage channels and power cables, renovate the base of the V.I. Lenin monument, and add convenient benches and trash bins. A bike parking area will be set up, the lighting system upgraded, the fountain basin faced with granite slabs, and stairways improved. The project's total cost exceeds 100 million rubles.
"Cosmonauts Square was created over 20 years ago, and in all that time, it has never undergone major repairs—only in 2013 was a fountain installed here," Malakhov noted. "Last year, the modernization project for this public space won the popular online vote. Work has now begun, with plans to complete it by the end of the year. Builders will revitalize an 8,400-square-meter area. This is a clear example of how people-driven initiatives receive support and funding. Right now, a nationwide vote is underway to select improvement projects for 2027."
The all-Russia online vote for urban improvement projects runs from April 21 to June 12, 2026. It is held as part of the federal program Creating a Comfortable Urban Environment, which falls under the national project Infrastructure for Life. This year, over 6,000 sites across 88 Russian regions are up for consideration. Residents can vote for projects in their municipality on the platform zagorodsreda.gosuslugi.ru using a verified account on the Gosuslugi (State Services) portal. Votes can also be cast via the Gosuslugi Reshaem Vmeste (State Services: Decide Together) mobile app or with the help of volunteers stationed in public spaces.
