Malaysian man jailed for insulting king in viral TikTok post

A man has been jailed for three months after posting offensive remarks about Malaysia’s Yang di-Pertuan Agong on TikTok. Mohd Hafiz Haron admitted the post was insulting and caused widespread public anger. The court also imposed a RM5,000 fine, with an additional four months in jail if unpaid. The offence took place on September 11, 2025, when Mohd Hafiz used the TikTok account @muhammad.bin.abdu969 to share the controversial post. By 10pm that same day, a complainant in Taman Pelangi, Semenyih reported seeing the remarks. Three others later filed similar complaints.

Mohd Hafiz was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. During proceedings, he acknowledged that the content was offensive and likely to provoke distress. The court handed down the sentence today, ordering immediate imprisonment and the fine.

The case concludes with Mohd Hafiz beginning a three-month jail term. The RM5,000 fine must be paid to avoid an extra four months behind bars. The ruling follows multiple reports from the public over the TikTok post’s inflammatory content.
