High Costs for Police Deployment at Anti-AfD Protests - Massive Giessen protest against AfD turns violent with dozens injured
A large protest in Giessen saw around 25,000 people rally against the AfD and its newly formed youth wing. Clashes between demonstrators and police left over 50 officers injured, along with some protesters. Authorities deployed thousands of officers from across Germany to manage the situation. The operation in Giessen involved several thousand police, including federal officers and reinforcements from 15 other states. Rhineland-Palatinate sent 123 officers, with 117 coming from the State Police Headquarters for Operations, Logistics, and Technology. Additional personnel included two officers each from the Rhine-Palatinate and Trier headquarters, as well as one each from Mainz and West Palatinate.
Despite the violence, none of the Rhineland-Palatinate officers sustained injuries. Emergency responders from the region returned safely after the deployment. The operation, however, came at a high cost, with personnel expenses exceeding €253,000 for the Rhineland-Palatinate contingent alone.
The protest in Giessen drew a massive police presence to maintain order. While many officers were injured, those from Rhineland-Palatinate avoided harm. The financial and logistical scale of the operation highlights the challenges faced by authorities during large demonstrations.
