Meerbusch's New Cooperative Aims to Fix the Affordable Housing Crisis

A new cooperative is taking shape in Meerbusch to tackle the demand for affordable housing. MeerWohnen eG was established in late April 2023 with a clear goal: to build and manage secure, low-cost homes in the city. The first development—a set of twelve publicly subsidised row houses—is already planned for Kierster Straße in the Lank district. The project brings together local government and private expertise. The city of Meerbusch is providing land and urban planning support to the cooperative. Meanwhile, Fairhome GmbH, a subsidiary of the Dornieden Group, has joined as a founding member. The company specialises in financing and implementing low-cost housing schemes.

Martin Dornieden, managing director of Fairhome, highlighted the importance of the partnership. He noted that the available land and combined experience of the project team create a solid foundation for developing subsidised housing. Fairhome’s role includes securing funding and applying its knowledge in affordable housing projects. Support for the initiative is growing. Michael Kirchner of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss coordination agency for affordable housing has backed the first development. The cooperative also aims to ease financial pressure on the city, as the collaboration with Fairhome is expected to reduce strain on Meerbusch’s municipal budget. Plans are underway to formally register MeerWohnen eG in the cooperative register by summer 2026.

The first phase of the project will deliver twelve row houses on Kierster Straße. With land, funding, and expertise in place, the cooperative moves closer to its goal of providing long-term affordable housing. Meerbusch residents may soon see more options for secure, low-cost living in the city.
