Meerstad's Circular Market Hall Unites Shopping, Dining, and Community Under One Roof

A new circular market hall is set to become the heart of Meerstad, a growing district in Groningen, Netherlands. Designed by De Zwarte Hond for developer MWPO and Jumbo supermarket, the building will combine shopping, dining, and community space under one roof. Its innovative, eco-friendly design aims to bring people together while cutting carbon emissions. Markets have long been focal points in European towns, and this project revives that tradition in Meerstad. The area, planned for 5,000 new homes, will now include a timber structure designed to adapt over time. De Zwarte Hond’s design uses cross-laminated wood, which naturally stores carbon and creates a warm, biophilic atmosphere.

The building’s cathedral-like shape is not just for looks—it supports flexibility for future needs. Solar panels and geothermal storage will power the hall, reducing its environmental impact. Inside, the space will host a Jumbo supermarket alongside areas for eating and socialising. The project also reflects Jumbo’s recent efforts to improve customer experience. Earlier, the supermarket chain introduced 'chat checkouts' to help elderly shoppers feel more comfortable. Now, this new hall will serve as a gathering place for all residents, blending daily shopping with community life.

The market hall will open as a key part of Meerstad’s development. Its timber construction, renewable energy systems, and adaptable design ensure it can evolve with the neighbourhood. Once complete, the space will offer shopping, dining, and social activities in one sustainable location.
