Mohamed Diab's Asad redefines Egyptian cinema with a $7M historical epic
Egyptian director Mohamed Diab is preparing for the release of his ambitious historical epic Asad. The film, his first major Arab production since working on Moon Knight in Hollywood, stars Mohamed Ramadan in the lead role. With a budget of $7 million, the project aims to deliver the scale of a $40 million blockbuster. Diab’s Asad draws inspiration from the story of Spartacus, with Ramadan playing the titular character. Despite having no prior swimming or diving experience, the actor insisted on performing his own stunts. Production faced financial challenges, but Diab and Ramadan personally funded an extra day of shooting to complete key scenes.
The film is produced by Good Fellas Media Production, Big Time Fund, and Scoop Egypt. It will premiere in Egypt on May 14, followed by a wider MENA release on May 21 through distributor Empire International. Alongside Razane Jammal, Ramadan leads a cast in what Diab describes as his first true Egyptian blockbuster. Beyond *Asad*, Diab is also developing *The Note*, a Netflix film based on his experiences in Hollywood. The project critiques the American dream and his own fascination with the industry.
Asad marks a significant moment for Egyptian cinema, blending high production values with a historical narrative. Its release across the Middle East will test its appeal as a homegrown blockbuster. Meanwhile, Diab’s next project, The Note, will explore his time in Hollywood from a personal perspective.
