Munich's Green Party mayor leads coalition talks to reshape city's future
MUNICH – The Green Party, SPD, FDP, Free Voters, and the Rosa Liste (Pink List) have concluded exploratory talks on forming a new coalition in Munich's city council. In a statement from Munich's Green Party, the factions announced they had "jointly agreed to recommend to their respective bodies the launch of formal coalition negotiations to establish a new city government."
The exploratory discussions reportedly fostered a climate of trust and revealed substantial common ground on key policy issues. "The goal of the negotiations is to swiftly form a stable and effective Munich coalition that tackles major challenges with determination and shapes the city's future reliably in the coming years."
Traffic Light Coalition Aims to Accelerate Munich's Transport Transition
In March, Dominik Krause (Green Party) was elected Munich's lord mayor, decisively defeating incumbent Dieter Reiter (SPD) in a runoff. Krause will now lead the upcoming coalition talks.
He described the exploratory discussions as "marked by trust, constructive dialogue, and a shared commitment." According to reports, the factions addressed "the creation and preservation of affordable housing, advancing the transport transition, and consolidating the city's budget."
Greens Hold Largest Share in City Parliament
The inaugural session of Munich's city council is set for May 11, where Krause will be sworn in as lord mayor.
With 21 of 80 seats, the Green Party will be the largest faction in the council, followed by the CSU with 19 seats. The SPD holds 15, AfD and the Left Party each have 5, Volt 4, FDP 3, Free Voters 2, the Ecological Democratic Party (ÖDP) 2, Die Partei 1, the Rosa Liste 1, the Munich List 1, and the Culture Alliance 1.
Together, the expanded traffic light alliance commands 42 of the 80 seats.
