Munich's 'Mango Coalition' takes charge under new mayor Dominik Krause

Munich’s new lord mayor, Dominik Krause, has officially signed a coalition agreement with five parties to lead the city. The deal came after weeks of negotiations and a brief delay due to his illness. Known as the 'Mango Coalition,' the alliance brings together green, pink, red, yellow, and orange factions under a 35-page plan titled New Beginnings and Renewal. Unity and Reliability. For Munich. Krause’s first days in office focused on resolving the long-standing issue of the Eisbach wave. By the end of his first week, the popular surfing spot was stabilised and reopened for use. This early action set a proactive tone for his leadership.

The coalition agreement was finalised on Monday, shortly after Krause recovered from an infection. Volt, another party, had earlier abandoned talks, citing excessive personnel demands. Their departure left the remaining five parties to form what Krause playfully dubbed the 'Mango Coalition'—though Christian König, a fellow politician, expressed doubts about the name. Key appointments followed the agreement. Mona Fuchs of the Green Party will take on the role of second mayor, while Verena Dietl from the SPD remains third mayor. Alexander Dietrich, a CSU member, was named the new head of municipal administration. The coalition now faces pressing challenges, including tackling Munich’s housing crisis and stabilising the city’s finances. Krause has also voiced support for Munich’s Olympic bid, a stance that contrasts with some members of his own party. His backing adds momentum to the city’s efforts to secure the games.

The new government takes office with a clear set of priorities and a broad political alliance. Housing shortages and financial stability will demand immediate attention. Meanwhile, the coalition’s ability to work together will shape Munich’s direction in the coming years.
