New York cracks down on unlicensed gambling with new public warning campaign
The New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) has launched a new campaign to warn residents about the risks of unlicensed gambling. Called Avoid Risky Bets, the initiative highlights the dangers of offshore operators and prediction markets that often target vulnerable players. The campaign focuses on educating the public about the tactics used by unregulated gambling sites. These platforms frequently lure in young people under the legal gambling age of 21. Unlike licensed operators, they lack key safeguards such as self-exclusion tools and access to support services.
Unlawful gambling markets also fail to contribute taxes to the state. Players who feel cheated have no way to seek justice, as these sites offer no independent dispute resolution. The NYSGC stresses that regulated gambling in New York provides fair wagers, player protections, and responsible gaming measures. NYSGC Chairman Brian O’Dwyer stated that the goal is to steer bettors away from unregulated sites that could harm them. The commission is reminding residents of the legal, safer alternatives available within the state.
The Avoid Risky Bets campaign teaches people how to recognise the warning signs of illegal gambling. By promoting licensed operators, the NYSGC aims to protect consumers and ensure fair, tax-paying gaming. Residents are urged to avoid unregulated platforms that lack oversight and accountability.
