Nova Scotia MP Jaime Battiste fined for breaking Canada’s election laws
Nova Scotia Liberal MP Jaime Battiste has been fined $600 for breaking Canada's election laws. The Commissioner of Canada Elections found that Battiste, currently serving as parliamentary secretary to the minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, filed false and misleading information during his 2019 candidate nomination contest in Sydney-Victoria. Battiste's violations included donating funds to his own campaign that exceeded the legal limit by nearly $1,500. His financial agent at the time, Kevin Chant, who also started working for Battiste in 2019, was fined an identical amount for his role in the infractions. Battiste's excessive donations were made during his successful nomination contest in Sydney-Victoria. Earlier this year, Battiste sought the Liberal party leadership but withdrew from the race early on. Both Jaime Battiste and his former financial agent, Kevin Chant, have been fined $600 each for violating Canada's elections laws. The penalties stem from false and misleading information filed during Battiste's 2019 candidate nomination contest. Despite the infractions, Battiste continues to serve as a Nova Scotia Liberal MP and parliamentary secretary.
