Potsdam (dpa/bb) – The Brandenburg Association of Towns and Municipalities has expressed understanding for Potsdam's planned tax on single-use packaging. Local authorities are increasingly exploring ways to generate additional revenue, said Oliver Hermann, the association's president and an independent, noting, "This stems from the current budget situation." He described the trend as one being observed across the entire state of Brandenburg, warning that if the state continues to place financial burdens on municipalities, further tax hikes could be on the table.
Potsdam's bold new tax on disposable packaging starts July 2023
Starting July 1, the state capital will introduce a packaging tax on disposable tableware and single-use containers—a first for Brandenburg. The city council approved the measure in March.
The surcharge will amount to 50 cents per disposable cup, plate, or bowl, and 20 cents per piece of cutlery. According to city estimates, the tax is expected to generate around one million euros in annual revenue from 2027 onward. Potsdam's initiative follows the example set by Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg, where a similar levy has already been implemented. Freiburg and Konstanz have since adopted comparable measures.
