Region gears up for pivotal local elections on 13 September

Local elections will take place across the region on 13 September. Voters will choose mayors, lord mayors, and district administrators for eight-year terms. Several incumbent candidates are seeking re-election in key positions. In Wolfenbüttel, Ivica Lukanic will run again as the independent mayor. Christiana Steinbrügge, the current district administrator, has decided not to seek another term.

Dennis Weilmann of the CDU is standing for re-election as lord mayor of Wolfsburg. Frank Klingebiel, also from the CDU, will do the same in Salzgitter.

In Braunschweig, Dr. Thorsten Kornblum of the SPD is the incumbent lord mayor and will defend his position. He faces a challenge from Maximilian Pohler of the CDU.

All German citizens aged 16 and older can vote if they have lived in their municipality for at least three months. EU citizens of the same age may also participate if they are registered in the electoral roll. The elections will determine leadership in several major municipalities for the next eight years. Polls open on 13 September for all eligible residents in the region.
