Rubio urges Europe to align with U.S. on migration and defense reforms

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for stronger ties between America and Europe while pushing for major changes in global policy. Speaking at a high-level meeting, he stressed the need for unity on migration, defence, and reforming international institutions. His remarks came as European leaders also weighed in on the future of transatlantic relations.

Rubio began by reaffirming the U.S. commitment to its partnership with Europe. He insisted that America wants a strong, independent Europe capable of defending itself. Without this, he warned, the transatlantic alliance would struggle to meet modern challenges.

On migration, Rubio took a firm stance, labelling 'mass migration' a destabilising crisis. He urged European leaders to align with U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies to tackle the issue. The secretary also criticised the United Nations, calling it 'practically irrelevant' and demanding reforms to the 'old global order'. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi defended the UN, describing it as 'still the best and most powerful tool we have'. His comments contrasted sharply with Rubio’s push for a 'renewal' of global governance alongside Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen added another layer to the debate. She proposed reviving the EU’s mutual assistance clause to cut reliance on the U.S. Despite differences, Rubio’s core message remained clear: Europe and America must act together—but on Washington’s terms.

Rubio’s speech sets the stage for further discussions on migration, defence, and global reforms. His call for a 'rational foreign policy' signals a push for closer U.S.-Europe coordination, though not without friction. How European leaders respond to his demands—especially on migration and military self-reliance—will shape the alliance’s next steps.
