Russia Day weekend arrives as EU tensions and storms loom

Russia Day will bring a three-day weekend for citizens from June 12 to 14. Meanwhile, tensions between Moscow and the EU have risen again after new sanctions were imposed. The weather in southern Russia also looks unsettled, with storms expected in the Krasnodar Region this week. The European Union expanded its sanctions list against Russia by 23 entries on May 11. Hungary, however, refused to back measures that could harm its own economic interests. Earlier, the Kremlin stated that political will from Europe would be necessary before any dialogue could resume.

In Nairobi, French President Emmanuel Macron interrupted a summit to criticise attendees for making too much noise. The incident drew attention as leaders gathered for discussions on climate and global cooperation. Five nations—Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland, and the Netherlands—announced they would boycott this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Their decision came in protest against Israel’s participation in the competition. Weather forecasts for the Krasnodar Region predict heavy rain, hail, and thunderstorms until the end of the week. Gusts could reach up to 18 metres per second, while daytime temperatures on May 12 will hover between +20°C and +25°C. Near the Black Sea, slightly cooler conditions of +18°C to +23°C are expected.

The upcoming Russia Day holiday offers a brief respite for citizens amid ongoing international tensions. Stormy weather in southern Russia may disrupt travel plans, while the EU’s latest sanctions highlight persistent divisions. The Eurovision boycott and Macron’s summit outburst further underscore the current political climate.
