The image shows a long hallway in an airport with yellow caution tape on the floor. There are pillars, boards with text, screens, lights, glass walls, and other objects. On the right side of the image, there are glass windows, and in the background, there is a person standing. The yellow tape is likely a warning sign, indicating that the airport is closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Russia denies hantavirus outbreak at Nizhny Novgorod airport

Russian health authorities have denied claims of a hantavirus infection at Nizhny Novgorod’s airport. The reports, which circulated online, were labelled as false by Rospotrebnadzor. Officials took swift action to clarify the situation and reinforce monitoring measures. The rumours first appeared on social media, prompting concern among travellers. Alexei Nikonov, editor-in-chief of MIA 'Stationary-Press', addressed the issue in his MAX channel 'Bokal Press-Seka'. His update helped spread the official response more widely.

To prevent any potential risk, Rospotrebnadzor activated the 'Perimetr' monitoring system at V.P. Chkalov Airport. This system is designed to track and contain infectious diseases, including the Andes strain of hantavirus. Authorities emphasised that no confirmed cases had been detected.

The denial from Rospotrebnadzor aims to reassure the public and prevent unnecessary panic. The enhanced monitoring system remains in place as a precaution. Travellers and staff at the airport have been advised to follow standard health guidelines.
