Russia's Cassation Court Upholds Convictions for Two Rioters in Makhachkala Airport Unrest
Russian Court Upholds Prison Terms for Makhachkala Airport Rioters
The Fourth Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction reviewed appeals filed by defense lawyers for two convicted participants in the mass riots that erupted on October 29, 2023, at Makhachkala Airport. Their case had been previously heard by the Ust-Labinsky District Court in Krasnodar Territory.
The court found that the two men, acting on motives of national and religious hatred, joined a mob of around 1,500 people awaiting a flight from Tel Aviv and incited chaos in the airport. Dozens of law enforcement officers were injured in the violence, and the facility suffered substantial material damage.
All defendants were found guilty, with sentences handed down based on the severity of their crimes. The first was sentenced to seven years in a general-regime penal colony, while the second received eight years.
An appellate court later upheld the original ruling. The cassation court, after examining the defense appeals, deemed the judicial decisions lawful and well-founded, finding no grounds for overturning them. The court also affirmed that the sentences were fair and not subject to mitigation, either under individual charges or in aggregate.
