Russian gang leader Yuri Kozlov faces trial for decades of violent crimes

Russian investigators have completed their probe into a high-profile criminal case involving Yuri Kozlov and his gang. The case, which includes charges of multiple murders and organised crime, has now been sent to court for trial.

A total of 29 individuals have been implicated in the investigation, with one defendant apprehended abroad earlier this year.

The charges stem from a series of violent crimes dating back to 2004. In November of that year, Kozlov and his accomplices allegedly murdered the brother of a rival gang leader, along with an associate. The victims were linked to the Shagivaleyevskaya gang, a group in conflict with Kozlov’s organisation.

In May 2005, the gang reportedly killed a young woman to cover up an earlier murder of another *Shagivaleyevskaya* member. Kozlov and three others now face charges for these killings under Russia’s Criminal Code. Kozlov is also accused of planning another murder—the targeted killing of the rival gang’s leader by first eliminating his brother. Additionally, one defendant is charged with participation in an armed criminal group. The investigation took years to complete, with one suspect detained in a neighbouring country in January 2025 after being placed on an international wanted list.

The case will now proceed to trial, where Kozlov and his alleged accomplices will face multiple charges, including murder and organised crime. If convicted, they could receive severe penalties under Russian law. The trial is expected to address the full scope of the gang’s activities over two decades.
