Salzgitter: Local CDU Politician Stefanie Steckhan Dies at 63
Salzgitter mourns Stefanie Steckhan, a tireless advocate for workers' rights
Stefanie Steckhan, a prominent Salzgitter-based CDU municipal politician, has passed away. According to the CDA district association of Braunschweig—where she served as deputy chair—she died suddenly and unexpectedly last Thursday at the age of 63.
Born in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt in December 1962, Steckhan remained deeply rooted in her hometown throughout her life. Since 1995, she had been actively involved in various social causes on a voluntary basis. In 2016, she joined the Christian Democratic Employees' Association (CDA). As chair of the CDA in Salzgitter and deputy state chair in Braunschweig and Lower Saxony, she championed workers' rights. On the local level, she made her mark as the CDU faction leader for the Nord district.
Community in Shock
News of her sudden death has left many reeling. Dr. Alexander Bürger, CDA state chair in Braunschweig, offered an initial response: "Her loss is deeply painful. Our thoughts are with her family. She will be greatly missed, and we will honor her memory."
At the SuPer Salzgitter e.V. association, she was considered the heart of the community. Gianluca Calabrese and the organization's team expressed profound grief, calling her the driving force and guiding spirit behind their work. She was the one who always knew where to step in and make a difference. In a moving farewell, Calabrese wrote: "Thank you, Steffi, for every moment we were able to share with you. You leave behind traces that cannot simply be erased."
