Schwerin. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister-President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has warned of growing public unease amid the reform debate and called on Chancellor Friedrich Merz to present a comprehensive plan to safeguard the welfare state.
Schwesig urges Merz to unveil Germany's economic strategy amid reform chaos
"The chancellor must now put forward an overarching strategy to stabilize the economy and secure the welfare state," the SPD politician told newspapers of the Funke Media Group.
She acknowledged that it was right for the federal government to seek modernization of the welfare system, noting that contributions could not keep rising indefinitely. However, she stressed that solutions must be reasonable and balanced. "When a new reform proposal is debated every day, it only fuels anxiety and uncertainty," Schwesig said.
Under the government's plans, the cabinet is set to approve the budget framework and reforms to the financing of statutory health insurance this Wednesday.
