Sintra’s PSD-Chega coalition fractures alliances and sparks democratic backlash

In Sintra, the PSD's decision to form a coalition with Chega, a far-right party, has sparked controversy. Mariana Leitão, leader of Initiative Liberal (IL), has condemned this move, describing it as a betrayal of democratic principles.

IL had joined forces with PSD and PAN to form a majority in Sintra's municipal council, aiming to counterbalance Chega's influence. However, PSD's recent agreement with Chega has led to the inclusion of Anabela Macedo and Ricardo Aragão Pinto from Chega in the municipal executive, overseeing Security and Economic Activities, EU Funding, and Municipal Markets respectively.

Mariana Leitão, who had not discussed this matter with PSD's Marco Almeida, has dismissed suggestions of naivety. She maintains that IL is uncompromising in its principles and would not accept any agreements or coalitions with Chega. Leitão believes that PSD has betrayed itself more than it has betrayed IL by striking this deal. In response, IL has withdrawn its political support for Mayor Basílio Horta's administration.

Leitão also declined to judge Eunice Baeta's candidacy, stating she would not change her decision if given the chance to revisit the process. Despite the controversy, Leitão believes that a minority executive can still govern effectively if all parties act in good faith.

The PSD's coalition with Chega in Sintra has raised concerns about the direction of local politics. IL's withdrawal of support and Leitão's strong words suggest a potential realignment of political forces in the municipality.
