Söflingen unveils memorial steles to honor its troubled past
Three memorial steles were unveiled in Söflingen at Roter Berg on 8 May 2026. The quiet residential area now has its first visible reminders of its historical importance. Previously, no markers acknowledged the site’s past role in the city’s history. The area once stood outside the city limits but held a central place in its history. During the Weimar Republic, it was a place of exclusion and surveillance. Later, under Nazism, it became a site of disenfranchisement, exploitation, and persecution.
The new steles aim to address this gap in public memory. Their installation marks the first time the location’s troubled past has been formally recognised. The memorials now stand in a peaceful neighbourhood. They serve as a permanent record of the area’s significance during key historical periods. The unveiling ensures that its past is no longer overlooked.
