Solingen's barbecue plan sparks outrage over noise and pollution fears
Solingen – Opposition Grows Against City's Plan for Official Barbecue Site at Bülowplatz
In Solingen, the "City of Blades," resistance is mounting against municipal plans to establish an official barbecue area at Bülowplatz. The Bürgergemeinschaft für Solingen (BfS, Solingen Civic Association) has firmly rejected the proposal, placing particular blame on Department 4, led by Dagmar Becker, for the controversial initiative.
Location in Residential Area Sparks Outrage
The heart of the criticism lies in the proposed site's immediate proximity to residential buildings. Bülowplatz is tightly surrounded by homes—a fact even acknowledged in the city administration's own planning documents.
For the Civic Association, this is the proposal's fundamental flaw. Smoke, odors, and increased noise would inevitably degrade residents' quality of life, they argue.
District representative Jan Salewski has called the plan a "planning blunder," accusing the administration of ignoring the realities of the neighborhood.
Becker Under Fire for "Misguided" Proposal
The Civic Association has been particularly vocal about assigning responsibility. They argue it is incomprehensible that a site so closely embedded in a residential area was deemed suitable by Becker's department.
Critics contend that Becker bears political responsibility for a proposal that creates new conflicts rather than resolving existing ones.
The accusation: Instead of identifying appropriate locations with sufficient distance from homes, the administration is pushing a legally and practically problematic site.
Legal Risks Loom Over the Plan
The Civic Association also points to numerous court rulings on barbecuing in residential areas, which have repeatedly emphasized that smoke and odor nuisances in densely populated neighborhoods are only tolerable within strict limits.
In the critics' view, the administration's proposal fails to adequately consider these legal constraints.
Should the barbecue site be established, conflicts with residents and potential injunctions are all but inevitable, they warn.
Plan's Goals Risk Backfiring
According to the administration, the concept aims to protect recreational spaces, reduce usage conflicts, and improve the quality of public areas.
But the Civic Association sees the opposite effect: additional burdens on neighbors, more noise, and less tranquility in an already densely populated district.
For this reason, critics argue, the chosen location exemplifies flawed planning.
Demand: Withdraw the Proposal
The BfS is calling for Bülowplatz to be immediately removed from the list of potential barbecue sites. Instead, they urge the city to explore alternative locations with greater distance from residential buildings.
Additionally, the association demands earlier resident involvement in future site decisions.
Decision Carries Political Explosiveness
Upcoming discussions in the district council will reveal whether the administration stands by its proposal or backtracks.
One thing is already clear: The debate over the Bülowplatz barbecue site has long ceased to be merely a question of location. For Dagmar Becker, it could become a political stress test—and her critics are convinced that this proposal is a misstep for which her department must answer.
