Lost wedding ring hunt begins after icy lake mishap near Berlin

A wedding ring lost during an ice swim in January may soon be found. Anna Jona Koch, who misplaced the gold band at a gravel pit lake near Schildow, north of Berlin, has turned to a specialist for help. Mike Koch, a ring finder from Bernau, is now searching the area with his metal detector. Anna Jona Koch realised her ring was missing after an icy dip in the lake. The gold band, engraved with her name, had grown loose due to her husband’s recent weight loss. Suspecting another metal detectorist might have already discovered it, she still hoped for a chance to recover the sentimental piece.

Mike Koch, who also volunteers as a heritage conservationist, took on the search with confidence. He believes the shallow waters will make the task easier, estimating he could locate the ring within half an hour. To cover all possibilities, Koch plans to put up a notice by the lake and check with local lost-and-found offices.

The search is part of a wider effort by ring finders across Germany. Janik Ratke, who runs the online portal Ringfinder.eu, has spent eleven years helping people recover lost jewellery. For him, the motivation lies in reuniting owners with their cherished belongings. The hunt for Anna Jona Koch’s ring continues near Schildow. If successful, the find would mark another recovery by Germany’s network of dedicated ring finders. The outcome will determine whether the gold band, lost months ago, can be returned to its owner.
