Stefan Evers steps in as Berlin's interim culture chief amid reforms
Berlin (dpa/bb) — Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) has pledged to strengthen the operational capacity of Berlin's cultural administration. Following the resignation of Culture Senator Sarah Wedl-Wilson, he will additionally take over leadership of the culture portfolio until the end of the legislative term. "Berlin's cultural scene needs planning security and reliable conditions," he told dpa in response to a query.
Evers noted that Wedl-Wilson had built a team of state secretaries—Cerstin Richter-Kotowski and Alexander Straßmeir—ensuring that the cultural administration remains competently and assertively led.
Both officials, he said, would provide continuity in cultural policy over the remaining months of the legislative period. They also bring the necessary experience to address structural deficiencies within the administration, based on recommendations from Berlin's Court of Auditors.
Evers Vows to Push Ahead with Reforms
Against this backdrop, Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) asked Evers to assume responsibility for culture and social cohesion until the end of the term.
"I am taking on this role with the confidence that the administration is in very capable hands," Evers stated. "Together with the Senate Department team, I will work to bolster the cultural administration's ability to act, build trust among Berlin's cultural stakeholders, and advance the reforms already underway."
