Sverdlovsk region prepares for 41,000 first-graders amid enrollment decline

This academic year, the Sverdlovsk region will welcome over 41,000 first-graders across its schools. In Ekaterinburg alone, 19,369 children will begin their education. However, the total number of new pupils has fallen by 17% compared to last year. The region has 978 general education institutions ready for the new intake. These include 914 municipal schools, 49 state-run ones, and 15 private establishments. Parents can apply for places in two stages: from April 1 to June 30 for schools linked to their home address, and from July 6 to September 5 for any remaining spots.

Schools have already shared vacancy details on their noticeboards and official websites. To meet demand, School No. 23 in the Akademichesky District will open 15 new first-grade classes this year.

The drop in first-graders marks a significant change from previous years. With applications now open, families can secure places at their preferred schools. The region's education system continues to adapt to shifting enrolment numbers.
