"No Popcorn for Nazis" - Demonstration in Weilheim - Thousands protest AfD's new office plans in Weilheim
Around 4,000 people gathered in Weilheim to protest against the far-right AfD party’s plans for a new office. The demonstration was organised by the local alliance 'We in Weilheim' under the slogan 'Democracy demands courage. Now!' The Alternative for Germany (AfD) had leased a former cinema in the town to create an office with an event space. AfD members Benjamin Nolte and Gerrit Huy officially filed the usage notification for the office on 15 January. Nolte, a state parliament representative and candidate for district administrator, later released a video inviting people to visit the new space to learn about German culture.
Protesters carried signs with clear messages against the AfD’s plans. Some read 'Those who reject democratic values don’t need an office' and 'No propaganda center in Weilheim'. Mayor Markus Loth also spoke at the event, stating the office would bring unrest and insecurity to Weilheim. The protest highlighted strong local opposition to the AfD’s presence in Weilheim. The party’s office plans have sparked significant public resistance and political debate in the town.
