Two drivers face criminal charges after routine traffic stops in Lower Saxony

Police in Lower Saxony halted two vehicles during routine checks over the weekend. Both drivers now face serious charges after multiple violations were uncovered. The incidents involved a van and a car towing a trailer, each breaking different traffic laws.

On Braunschweiger Straße, officers inspected a van at a petrol station in Baddeckenstedt. The vehicle had no valid insurance and owed unpaid taxes in Germany. Inside were three people, none of whom wore seatbelts. The 20-year-old driver and his passengers were barred from continuing their trip, and the keys were seized.

The van was also found to be dangerously overloaded. Weighing 28% above the legal limit, it carried an extra 980 kilograms. The driver now faces criminal proceedings under the Mandatory Foreign Vehicle Insurance Act and the Motor Vehicle Tax Act. In a separate incident near Haverlah, a 39-year-old man from Salzgitter was stopped while towing a trailer. The combined weight of his car and trailer exceeded the 3,500-kilogram limit. The driver lacked the required BE-class licence for the combination. Authorities have launched criminal proceedings against him for driving without the proper permit.

Both drivers now face legal consequences for their violations. The van’s operator must answer for insurance, tax, and overloading offences, while the trailer driver will be prosecuted for licence and weight breaches. Police have confirmed that neither vehicle was allowed to continue after the checks.
