Ulf Poschardt leaves top editor role for creative freedom at Axel Springer
Ulf Poschardt is stepping down as editor-in-chief of Welt, Politico Germany, and Business Insider Germany on 1 July. After 16 years at Axel Springer, he will now take on a new role as a freelance writer and podcaster for the company’s premium division.
His shift follows a request for greater creative freedom in his journalistic work, allowing him to contribute across multiple platforms in fresh ways. Poschardt first joined Axel Springer in 2008 and was appointed editor-in-chief of the Welt group in 2016. Over the years, he has become a prominent voice in German media, known for his sharp commentary and ability to drive public discussion.
His 2024 bestseller, Shitbürgertum, cemented his reputation as a provocative thinker. A follow-up book, Bückbürgertum, is already scheduled for release in June 2026. Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer, highlighted Poschardt’s talent for sparking debate across different media formats.
In his new role, Poschardt will write a weekly column for Bild and appear in a video series for the same outlet. He will also produce daily ‘Three Questions, Three Answers’ clips for social media and host a one-on-one talk show on Welt TV. His contributions will extend to all of Axel Springer’s German and international brands, including Bild.
Poschardt was previously featured on the company’s website in December and attended their lab event in April. His transition marks a shift from editorial leadership to a more independent, content-focused position. From 1 July, Poschardt will no longer lead Welt, Politico Germany, or Business Insider Germany. Instead, he will focus on writing, podcasting, and video projects across Axel Springer’s media brands. The move reflects both his desire for creative flexibility and the company’s strategy to leverage his influence in new ways.
