Four injured in Mainz-Hechtsheim head-on collision during rush hour
A head-on collision in Mainz-Hechtsheim left four people with minor injuries on Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened at the intersection of Emy-Roeder-Straße and Hechtsheimer Straße around 5 p.m. Emergency services quickly arrived to handle the aftermath and assist those involved. The accident occurred when a 21-year-old woman driving a VW Polo tried to turn from Emy-Roeder-Straße into Hechtsheimer Straße. At the same time, a 47-year-old man in a VW Tiguan entered the intersection from Heiligkreuzweg, leading to the collision.
Both the Polo and Tiguan drivers suffered minor injuries. The Tiguan also carried two passengers—a 22-year-old woman and a 45-year-old woman—who were similarly slightly hurt. All four were treated at the scene. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles, forcing them to be towed away. The fire department sent 19 personnel to secure the area and manage leaked fluids. Meanwhile, Emy-Roeder-Straße remained closed until about 6:15 p.m., disrupting evening rush-hour traffic. Police are still examining the details to determine the exact cause of the crash.
The intersection has since reopened, but the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet released further information on liability or contributing factors. All injured individuals received medical attention before leaving the scene.
