Vienna police crack down on reckless drivers in weekend operation
Rotenturmstraße in Vienna's Inner City: Crackdown on "Posers" in Popular Shopping District
Rotenturmstraße, a bustling shopping street in Vienna's Inner City, is a well-known thoroughfare stretching from Stephansplatz to Schwedenplatz, lined with shops and restaurants. Designated as a shared pedestrian and vehicle zone, it has also become a favored spot for so-called "posers"—young men who cruise slowly through crowded streets in powerful, eye-catching cars to draw as much attention as possible.
Long a thorn in the side of local police, this behavior prompted a targeted enforcement operation late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m., officers stopped vehicles and checked drivers along Rotenturmstraße.
The results were striking: 34 breathalyzer tests were conducted, 93 citations were issued, and four cases were fast-tracked to an expedited judge. Additionally, 57 administrative fines were handed out, while 13 vehicles were ordered to undergo inspection by the regional vehicle testing authority due to suspected illegal modifications.
To top it off, one driver had their license temporarily revoked.
