Vy secures Norway's southern rail contract to replace troubled Go-Ahead

Norway’s Ministry of Transport has awarded Vy the contract to operate the Sørlandsbanen and Arendalsbanen train lines. The five-year deal begins in December 2027, replacing the current operator, Go-Ahead. The move aims to improve reliability and service quality after years of delays and cancellations under the previous provider. The Sørlandsbanen route connects Oslo to Stavanger, while the Arendalsbanen line runs from Nelaug to Arendal. Under the new agreement, Vy will introduce three modern long-distance trains from Stadler on the Sørlandsbanen. The Arendalsbanen will also receive updated vehicles, though specific details have yet to be announced.

Go-Ahead had won the original tender but struggled to maintain profitability. Poor vehicle upkeep led to frequent disruptions, frustrating passengers. Vy’s contract will prioritise punctuality, with reserve trains ready to step in during unexpected delays.

The operator has also pledged to refine timetables based on feedback from local councils and transport groups. Adjustments include an earlier morning departure from Oslo at 5:00 AM and extra stops in Telemark. These changes are designed to boost passenger numbers and convenience. The transition to Vy marks a shift in strategy for Norway’s southern rail network. With new trains, improved schedules, and a focus on reliability, the service is set to change from December 2027. Passengers can expect more consistent journeys and additional travel options in the coming years.
