Waldshut-Tiengen Receives Additional €1.2 Million in Urban Development Funding for Historic City Center

The city of Waldshut-Tiengen has secured a further €1.2 million in urban development grants for the revitalization of Waldshut's historic city center. With this latest increase, total approved funding for the project now stands at €7.2 million, as announced by the regional government during the official handover of the funding notification.

Funding Notification Ceremony and Objectives

Regional President Carsten Gabbert and Deputy Regional President Klemens Ficht presented the funding decision to Lord Mayor Martin Gruner and Deputy Mayor Petra Dorfmeister on Monday. The additional funds are intended to strengthen the historic city center while adapting it to modern needs. Gabbert emphasized the importance of combining heritage-sensitive restoration, contemporary infrastructure, and private-sector engagement to ensure the success of the measures.

Lord Mayor Gruner highlighted the modernization of the city's two town halls as a key project for the future of municipal administration. He described the renewed funding as a crucial step forward, enabling steady progress while also providing fresh momentum for the city center. He praised urban development funding as a long-standing and reliable partner.

Completed Projects in the City Center

Waldshut's city center revitalization program, launched in 2015, is now in its implementation phase, according to city officials. Several projects have already been completed, including the restoration of the listed Kornhaus (Grain House), which now serves as a public library, a venue for local associations, and an event space. The Alte Metzig (Old Butcher's Guildhall) heritage museum and the Unteres Tor (Lower Gate) city gate have also been renovated.

Public spaces have likewise undergone upgrades. The city cites the Wallstraße (Wall Street) and the forecourt of the Stadthalle (city hall) as examples of areas restored with urban development funding.

Progress in Tiengen and Future Plans

In addition to Waldshut's city center, the Tiengen Innenstadt Süd (Tiengen South City Center) revitalization area has been part of the program since 2015. New residential and commercial buildings have already been constructed there, and public spaces such as Untere Hauptstraße (Lower Main Street) and the marketplace have been redesigned. Further projects are planned for the coming years, including the construction of a parking garage and a mixed-use residential and commercial building on the Klettgau Carrée site, set to begin in 2027.

Waldshut-Tiengen has participated in urban development funding programs since 1976. To date, the city has received approximately €20 million in financial aid from federal and state governments. City officials describe the long-standing collaboration with funding bodies as a partnership marked by reliability and purposeful implementation.
