Cremlingen: CDU Calls for Safe, Practical Path Between Weddel and Schapen

Weddel and Schapen push for safer paved path after years of rough terrain

In a recent press release, the CDU in Weddel has demanded a secure and everyday-friendly pedestrian and cycling route connecting Weddel and Schapen. The focus is on the stretch between Weddel Nord near the local convenience store and the sports field in Schapen. What is currently just an unofficial dirt track should, according to the CDU's Cremlingen municipal association, be transformed into a reliable footpath and bike lane.

Andreas Appel, an independent candidate for the local council and citizen representative on the construction and mobility committee, reports that residents from both Weddel and Schapen have made it clear the current conditions are no longer acceptable. The existing path is uneven, heavily rutted in places, and nearly impassable in bad weather. Dangerous situations arise repeatedly, making the route unsafe for families with children, elderly residents, or cyclists commuting to work. The local CDU, along with the Die MITTE group on the municipal council, now aims to change this. Their proposal: a paved path along the existing compensatory green space, creating a direct and safe connection between the two districts that can be used in daily life.

Safety as a Priority

Michael Schwarze, the CDU's lead candidate for Weddel's local mayoral office, emphasized: "This isn't about a prestige project—it's a practical improvement for people's everyday lives. Right now, anyone walking or cycling between Weddel and Schapen is taking an unnecessary risk. We want to change that. A properly developed path will enhance safety and finally connect our communities the way they should have been linked long ago." Beyond traffic safety, he noted, the project is about quality of life. A better connection would make it easier to reach shops, sports facilities, or visit friends and family, while also offering more opportunities to travel without a car in daily routines.

Tobias Breske, the CDU's candidate for mayor of Cremlingen, also voiced strong support: "This idea meets a real local need. We're talking about solutions that work in practice and genuinely benefit people. A safe link between Weddel and Schapen isn't a luxury—it's a sensible investment in quality of life and safety. I'll push to ensure we work with the administration to find a viable solution."

Feasibility Study Demanded

The CDU is calling on the municipal administration to assess the project's feasibility and take the necessary steps forward. Those involved stress that both the demand and local support are clear. Even if adjustments to existing zoning plans are required, they argue, this should not delay such a meaningful improvement for Weddel and Schapen.
