Welsh election in Gŵyr Abertawe becomes a three-way battle for power
The Welsh Parliament election on 7 May is shaping up to be a tight race in Gŵyr Abertawe. Plaid Cymru, led by Rhun ap Iorwerth, leads the polls, while Reform UK and Labour vie for support. Voters in the region are divided over issues like healthcare, independence, and political tone. Labour has dominated Welsh politics since 1922 and held power continuously since devolution in 1999. Yet in Gŵyr Abertawe, the party now trails behind both Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. Some voters, like Rhiannon, a local teacher, still credit Labour’s past achievements but reject Plaid’s push for independence and distrust Reform UK’s policies.
Plaid Cymru’s campaign focuses on boosting healthcare, childcare, and Welsh culture. The party’s candidate in Gŵyr Abertawe, John Davies, has won over Lindon Tucker, a 74-year-old tractor workshop owner, who sees his vote as a show of support for Wales itself. Meanwhile, Reform UK, led locally by Dan Thomas, promises tax cuts, stricter immigration controls, and improved infrastructure. Criticism has also surfaced against Reform UK’s candidate, Francesca O’Brien, a Mumbles councillor accused of fuelling division. Disillusionment with Labour’s 26-year record on the NHS—despite higher per-capita funding than England—has led some, like Chris Orten and Morgan, to switch to the Green Party. Others cite frustration with the growing hostility in political debates. In this election, Plaid’s lead in the region remains narrow, with Reform UK close behind. Labour’s long-standing dominance now faces a serious challenge from both sides.
The outcome in Gŵyr Abertawe will reflect broader shifts in Welsh politics. Plaid Cymru’s promises on public services and culture compete with Reform UK’s tax and immigration stance. For the first time in decades, Labour’s grip on power in the region looks uncertain.
